While many people will agree that it takes a lot of time and effort to read to your younger children, it is well worth the effort in the end. Children will be able to develop those all-important literary skills well before the reach the age that they are able to read on their own. What reading to young children does is begin to get them acquainted with language, the alphabet, and the characteristics of the written language.

But studies have shown that many parents will neglect this important part of educating children. Most of the statistics show that educated parents are more likely to make the effort to read to their children as apposed those who are less educated.

Not only will reading improve the skills that children need in order to learn how to read and write, but it will also give them a greater enthusiasm for the task. Children will want to read stories on their own if they are read to as a young child. Those who are not read to a regular basis may get frustrated when they try to learn how to read. The best step to take with your own children is to establish a daily reading ritual in order to get your children used to reading books and knowing the language and characters that they will eventually be reading and writing themselves.
