The most unsettling time for new parents is trying to calm an anxious baby. The ‘nightly walks up and down the hall’, the ‘just getting to sleep when you’re woken again by agonised screams’, or ‘just getting baby settled and back into their cot when they stir and it starts all over again’. Made worse when someone else comes in and almost immediately settles your newborn, making you feel incompetent and useless.

There may be a reason your baby cries for no apparent reason at all. Some babies suffer from colic and/or reflux. This needs to be professionally diagnosed, usually by a paediatrician, and when it happens a weight is lifted from your shoulders. Finally, there is a reason to the madness, and there is usually a treatment for it too.

Simple remedies for reflux include keeping the baby’s head raised as much as possible, even feeding in an almost upright position. Raising the pillow in the cot, and making sure playtime is elevated and rarely on the tummy. Medication may be warranted. Colic can be soothed with very regular burping during and after feeds, even if the baby is breastfed.
